Has the fat lady sung on human players being able to compete with the best computers?

Didn't she sing (albeit less convincingly) in '97.

I don't know, but wouldn't the next step be to allow the human an analysis board vs the computer? Isn't that more fair since the computer "cheats" with infallible memory?

Humans no longer play chess computers which think on their own terms. They play systems largely programmed and conditioned to process the sum of human theory on the game. We've taught them our own way to go about it.

Give any human a chess-playing machine programmed only with the rules of the game, and he'll probably beat it.

Is there even a purpose of pitting man against machine?

Deep Blue was the last brute force engine.

I know the engines are getting smarter in regards to chess positions. At the end of the day it still has to be calculated. I stand with my statement!

The reason hydra doesn't count as a brute force engine is because it doesn't calculate every variation. Deep Blue was the last to do that (according to the hydra site). The tree is pruned of hopeless moves early on to reduce positions that have to be evaluated.

Fine, we call it selective brute force.
