AKizy just lost, but he's still #1 on the site, I thought that if weyerstrass won he'd be the #1 player, does anybody know why?

Yes, the victor gets rating points just as you or I would based on his opponents rating. 2nd beating 1st doesn't mean they swap places unless the rating gain for the winner takes him to highest rated. It didn't

Unless it did, and it is just that the player tables are only refreshed every 24 hours. If it did it will show tomorrow

Congratulations to Weyerstrass for a great game!

FAQ says:

"New Rating = Old Rating + K * (Score - Win Expectancy)
K is a constant (32 for 0-2099, 24 for 2100-2399, 16 for 2400 and above)"

Meaning that you don't get as many points if you win if you are over 2100 rating points as you would get otherwise.

Can this be the reason?

Absolutely. An awesome game, with plenty of moves I couldn't understand. I like to awe at chess at this level.

Looks like Weyerstrass has proven himself though, he probably deserves #1

Only 5 rating points in it now. All he needs to do is beat up 6 players graded 2050 quickly.

The 2 bishops again showed they are superior to 2 knights in an open position. What was Akizy thinking heading for this kind of troublesome situation.

I think until he takes over the top spot akizy deserves his place. Both are incredible players and deserve the #1 and 2 spots... just a matter of time before we see who gets what.

has anyone run this game through fritz or some other engine? I'm curious to see where Akizy went wrong.

I've just put it through Crafty, which assesses the final position at +0.72 at 18 ply (150 seconds). I don't think an engine assessment is enormously helpful with this game, Crafty was having real problems with it (at least it was taking a noticeable amount of time to make any assessment at all at some points). The opening that Akizy chose is probably not the best; according to my database it's been tryed 3 times before with the results at 2.5 - 0.5. The stem game was a correspondence game from 1980 - Sloth vs Abramov - and Akizy deviated on move 11. Abramov played 11. ... h5, which is probably more consistent with the gambit than putting pressure on the queenside, after Akizy won back the pawn the assessment jumped to +1.0 after Crafty had been assessing it as more or less level before then. Having said that the central passed pawn could have been dangerous if the kingside collapse had been prevented. Where Crafty did point out a probable improvement was 31. ... Ke8 which stops white from getting the f-pawn.

Not surprised an engine can't figure that game out... CC chess at that level is probably an engine at 10 min/move or more... i doubt an engine would beat akizy or weyerstrass in CC play. just my 2 cents.

I'm not sure but I think Akizy defeated some loser who was using some pretty strong engine a while back.
