If anyone announce a mate in five or something to me, I would be offended by it, I think it is very rude.
I say "Mate in 5", and see if the other player can see it as well. I don't say this online because some may take it offensively, I just say it to my friends, and everything be good and all.

If it's not an endgame, it's highly doubtful you can calculate a mate in 12 with 99%+ accuracy unless you're a genious, so announcing to your opponent that you have a mate in 12 is at best, rude, and at worst, stupid.
Here is one that's 11 half moves that is not mate but it forces black to give up a queen and two rooks for a pawn and a bishop.

It doesn't make a rat's ass to me if you announce to your opponent the mate. But to discuss games in progress is not only bad taste, it breaks TOS.

Considering they are on move 14 and assuming this announcement was on move 4 or 5 then we only have a few moves left to see how much a prat he was in suggesting a mate announcement
