Do you do it? I've got a game going where I can announce mate in 12 but it seems somewhat arrogant to mention this 12 moves ahead!😞

don't do it. the odds are your opponent will see that as an insult, and decide to drag the game for as long as possible.

Unless all your opponents moved are forced don't tell them just play it out.

This is when conditional moves would be a great idea. If they can do that at a crappy site like knotGame then I am sure it should be workeable here.

Sometimes when my opponent blunders or misses some tactical combination I mention it and I tell the right variation, but I think it's misunderstood very often. When my opponent tell same to me, I am happy to look over my mistake.

What happens if you miscalculated and there is no mate in 12?

That's what I was thinking. If the game is an endgame, your opponent will catch on after a couple of moves anyways. If it's not an endgame, it's highly doubtful you can calculate a mate in 12 with 99%+ accuracy unless you're a genious, so announcing to your opponent that you have a mate in 12 is at best, rude, and at worst, stupid.

I think there was a rule back in the good ole days that if you announced mate and couldn't produce the mate in the said number of moves, you were obligated to resign yourself -- which is only fair, since you were audacious enough to announce the defeat of your opponent but were unable to complete the task.

I like this rule, but I propose a variation. If your opponent announces mate and can't produce it, you should get one free kick to the nads for every move he announced the mate in. So in this case, mate-in-12 means 12 kicks to the nads if he doesn't produce it. Time-outs can be claimed if your opponent doesn't recover.

Every once in a while I announce mate in 42 on the first move of the game, particularly if I know my opponent...

as for actually announcing mate seriously, it doesn't help you and can make you look stupid so don't bother.
