I also seem to remember this particular puzzle being discussed in a thread once. If my memory is correct, it was generally agreed that the given solution of 1. g4+ doesn't look nearly as good for White as the author suggested.

I was that author of that thread. I though the discussion would be good. Lots of new player have joined since then and I could use the refresher.

No problem with that. When I said the author, I meant Reinfeld, who said that white was winning. Didn't someone analyze the resulting position with Fritz and come to the conclusion that Black was winning after the combination?

This is another of the 1001 puzzles. I'm pretty sure that the solution will say

1.g4+ Kxg4 2.Be6 winning the rook and White wins. I don't have the book so i'm not sure but the solution should be along these lines. ...[text shortened]...
Better moves besides 1.g4+?

Can either side win this position with white to move?
Why are you still asking if you don't comment on alternatives already posted?

It's pretty even after 1.g4+ with a slight advantage for black after the black rook comes off, -0.35 or something.

I would consider it a draw here, can't really see anything great for white with the 2 rooks.

The f3+ line mentioned just drops another pawn.

The best line looks like

1.Bc2 attacking the e-pawn again Re5 defending

And now I don't understand what the computer is telling me

2.b4 h6 3.Kf1 Kg6 Rd4 etc... 0.40

I don't understand these move.

The line Mephisto suggested is second best

2.a4 h6 3.Kf1 bxa4 4.Ba4 a5 etc... 0.34

No clue. Anyone else understand these moves?
