White to move. Is it possible to win this game for white or black?
Post your variation, which side you think will win and why. This isn't just an ordinary puzzle 🙂

g4 then be6 should win it for white

Judging from the last puzzle he posted, that's what he wants you to think. I suppose the two B's and no decent open files are enough to hold here Rahim? 😀

I agree with you, I played this position and it is really hard for white to move even thoug he has material advantage, not just the Bs, but the position of the king is very limiting, I think the imediate plan of acction should be to open a file on the queen side, even if this means sacrificing a pawn.

but lets wait for the solution.

After g4, it seems almost possible for black to checkmate White, but not quite. Or at least, I couldn't work it out.

Have you posited this one before???

I think you have because I remember g4+ was the "supposed" solution, but when put to the test it wasn't best, or even winning.

you have been too hasty....

g4+ fails.

look at the position, black is a pawn up.

g4+ Kxg4 (....2 pawns up)

BxR KxB

and now it is, 6p+B+B+K vs. 4p+R+R+K

now, also consider that there isn't opening files for the rooks (a1 would take several moves to control) and that Blacks King is much more active.

after g4+...I actaully prefer black.

I like this idea. a4 looks like a good move to me. White either opens the a-file or the c-file depending if black pushes the pawn or takes...

Whites white bishop get's some good squares to move to after capturing on a4 which is adds to the benefit of this plan...

I would try Bc2 Re5 and then a4, trying to open another file for the rook, while maintaining some pressure on the e-pawn. I feel white is playing for a win, but it will not be easy if black sticks to defending.

Actually, Bc2 looks good also. The pin against blacks rook looks quite tasty.

Bc2 ..d5
f2 ..Re5 (forced because of the g4 threat..)
Rd4

What black should play here is debatable but i can't see many great moves from this position. It is worth noting that black is caught in a number of pins. He cannot play ..e2 as f3! folks. ..exf2 loses a rook...

Actually you are right, an imediate Re5 is better than the line i have just given...

I'm not posting this puzzles to trick you. I'm posting them so we can discuss and improve everyones game. Learn how to analyse the position.

This is another of the 1001 puzzles. I'm pretty sure that the solution will say

1.g4+ Kxg4 2.Be6 winning the rook and White wins. I don't have the book so i'm not sure but the solution should be along these lines.

Don't trust anyone but yourself. I don't think white can win the position after the 1.g4+ line. The two bishop and pawns are way to powerful. Here we see the power of the bishop pair. I've seen a rook and knight on an open board dominated by 2 bishop in the proper hands and both the rook and knight were captured swiftly. I couldn't believe my eyes.

So after 1.g4 + Kxg4 2.Be6 capturing the rook after can white win this?
Thoughts?

Better moves besides 1.g4+?

Can either side win this position with white to move?

what about
1. g4+ Kxg4
2. Be6 NonKing move
3. f3+

On move two black cant play K any where because white can pick up the rook with another clever pawn drop or simply for free. If 2.....Kf4 then
3. f3 exf4
4. Rd4+

And the Rook has been won with accurate play by white (all forcing checkmoves eventually lead to the winning of the free rook)

If instead of Kf4, how about...2...Bf4 trying to block out white...so
2......Bf4
3. f3 (forcing exf3 due to Kxf33 Bxf5 for free and no capture could lead to weaknesses by blacks King and rook)
3.......exf3
4. Bxf5
From here black has more pawns and doubled bishops but I played this position out several times (with my brother OTB 1500ish) and we found white to be winning from here. I dunno, but black definantly needs to play Bf4 to help keep the rook check out

Edit: when I looked into Bf4, i thought white would come out ahead, so I was shocked to find that black stands as well as he does, that being said I would still slightly favor white, black just has too many undefended (weak) pawns. White can win them back and trade 1 rook for a bishop and an extra passed pawn. From there its simple 3v3 (queenside) or 3v2 (again queenside with +for white) and Rook vs Bishop.

Edit 2: so when are you gona tell us the answer? btw, i dont criticize my line too quickly, I played about 5 versions (as i mentioned above) and I analyzed on Rhp board for about 10min, so forgive me if I missed somethign stupid.
