Because whites queen was about to run amok on the black position. Black was going to lose a rook and a couple of pawns.

All I can see is 11...Kd7 12. Qf7+ Kc8 13. Qf5+ Nd7 (or, very badly, Qd7!?, losing lots of materiel). Please fill me in guys.

Edit: I just saw 12 Qf5+, which I think forces mate in one either way the king moves. He/she/it must have seen that, even though I probably wouldn't have 🙂. But I don't see a way of winning the rook, apart from the dumb first variation 😕

1...Kd7 12.Qf5+ Ke8 13.Nb6 Qd7 (13...Qf6 14.Qc8+ Qd8 15.Qxb7) 14.Nxd7

Either way, black loses weight. Lots of it.

Senor Shredder gives
11... Kd7 (g6 leads to the following but with black down a pawn too)
12. Qf5+ Ke8 (Kc6 Nb4🙄
13. Nb4 Nf6 (Qe77 Qc8+ Qd8 Bf7+ and the queen is lost. If Ke7, then Qe6🙄 (Qd7 Be6 Qe7 Nd5 winning the queen and threatening mate)
14. Qe6+ Qe7 (Be7 Qf7+ Kd7 Be6🙄
15. Qc8+ Qd8
16. Bf7+ winning the queen. If he tries Ke7, then Qe6#

Thanks, I get it now. For some reason I thought after Kd8 I white would be able to play Qe6 for checkmate 😳

And thank you too, ark.
