as a reasonable player ( in my opinion) but not a very good starter...could i have some advice on some decent openings. also could i have some feedback on whether this opening was at all good?
1. e4 d5 2.Qd1f3 c5 3. exd5 Ng8f6 4. Qf3c3 Qd8xd5 5. b4 cxb4 6. Qc3xc8.
thanks guys i look forward to many good responses! fred
obviously because he's not a great player. white was not trotting his queen around + i got his bishop with it so it cant have been that bad. whites ( my) opening wasnt that bad because it developed the queen and opened up the centre of hte board while still having an attacking element with the two bishops being free to move along the diagonals and the queen being able to, as you so aptly put it, "trot around"!
If you're really determined to reach 1400 like your profile says, stop playing rubbish moves like Qf3 and either get yourself an opening book or use one of the opening databases on the web. You'll never make 1400 with your "strategy" of leading with your Queen; good players salivate when they see an opponent rush their Queen out in to the middle of the board where it can be harassed by Bishops, Knights and pawns. Your opening sucks!

1. e4 d5 2. Qf3? dxe4 3. Qxe4 Nf6...and Black chases your queen around the board while developing until White has lost the game and should resign in shame!
2. Qf3 wasn't a great move. It makes the Q vulnerable to being attacked, losing White tempo, and it keeps his Knight off the f3 square, which is the best place for it. White's Pawn was already guarded. White should have developed something else.
2...c5 is generally an ok move, but here Black's d Pawn is in danger, so he should have dealt with that by taking the e-pawn, pushing ...d4 or ...c6, maybe ...Nf6 (that lets White push e5 and dislodge the N though).
4. Qc3 wastes a tempo putting the Q on a square that the OTHER N should go to, and takes away protection from a center P that is under attack. Black's response 4...Qxd5, puts him in control.
5. b4 wasn't bad. Black shouldn't take it because of what happened in this game. It lets White's B develop while attacking a Pawn that is itself influencing the center.
5...cxb5?? was obviously a blunder.
