With my schedule, unless I find something/someone close to home, I can't swing the 1-2 hour travel for lessons, nor have I found anything interesting close.

Do people give online lessons, 1on1? hourly? If so, is there any place reputable I can go? I'm not just looking for someone with a high rating to play against, but looking for a good instructor with some experience in teaching as well.

anyone have any experience on the student or teacher side?

Playchess and ICC both have teaching facilities and various people who can tutor you. As it happens I have a month or so to kill so could spend some time tutoring.

I can never get those java applets/software to work through a proxy server for some reason. Most of the time when I'm online, I'm behind a proxy 🙁

Well playchess and ICC + all of the good chess servers are software. If you are going to get worth while online lessons then it will probably be on those servers 🙂

Hello,

I give some free instruction on Rhp when I have time. You can checkout the following threads of mine in the chess forum:

Need help getting to 1400,1600, 1800. Studying master games.

Just hit search and type the title in or search for my name and they will come up.

Personal lessons I give on fics or in person and charge for them.
with FICS you download a client and then just use that to log on. Pretty simple. Should be no problems logging in and using it.

Edit: Some free lectures on:

chess.fm

Register for your 7 day trial free and wacth all lecture in that week.

I still can't get over you charging for your damn lessons. I mean, it's not like you ever pay for anything anyway...

Chess Magnet School is a site I just started using. You can either pay for the subscription and get a coach, or you can just do the 30 day trial. That's what I am doing, and you still have access to most of the site's features. So far I have only done the exercises, and I have found them helpful. However, if you are an intermediate - advanced, then you should skip all the beginner exercises, though it never hurts to brush up.

I need more 1 on 1 lessons, id much rather in person...someone who can judge what my weaknesses are and what I need to work on, etc. someone who can tailor excersizes

self instruction only goes as far as my attention span.....especially with porn 1 click away.

Let me explain something to you.

You obviously don't know me so you must be talking about me no paying for Rhp and chess lectures on ICC.

I pay for meaning full things.

I put myself through 5.5 years of University,Engineering, on Student Loans. I owe them $22G, which I've paid off almost half within the first month of graduation. I don't have to start paying back till 6 months but interest starts on day 1.Everyday that goes by I lose $3. Before it was $5.

I bought my first car in Grade 12, Fixed it myself in Mechanics. Bought my second car, 2 years after been driving it since. Both were used and had problems. My second car, I've been jumping in and out of the passenger door for 2 years now because my driver door doesn't work. I bought both the cars with my own money, pay for insurance, parking, gas everything on my own.

I pay rent. I pay my OTB memebership which allows me to sign out books from the club.

So no I don't own any of my own chess books, and no I don't pay for Rhp and ICC and no I haven't found my Engineering job yet. Working part time and looking for a real Engineering job.

So what? I'm not a spoilt kids unlike a lot of kids now days. I'm proud of what I have earned on my own.

What do you have to say for yourself now?

A lot of people do that...So don't think I feel sympathy/empathy/pity for you.

I still don't think it's fair for you to charge money for chess lessons over the internet - you're only appx. 1850. If you were 2000+ I'd completely understand it - and I understand that you're just trying to make a buck, but come on, it's basic chess fundamentals that you'd be teaching.

I'm not forcing anyone to pay me. I offer free lessons on Rhp for the general public.

If someone wants to pay me for personal instruction fine. Lots of people at our club do it.

There's a local chess shop which runs all the junior events. They teach little kids. Nothing wrong in that. I'm the cheapest in Edmonton, and I'm not here to make money. Simply to cover my gas money. Time is worth money. I could be out working for more then $10 a hour.

I have some students. One on Rhp and he's now a 1600 player, before he was 1000-1100 and it only took 10 lessons.

I don't need pity. Just because I don't subscribe to Rhp makes me cheap and because I watch some free lectures online? Meaningless.

What's your point? A lot of teachers aren't exactly great players. How many professional coaches would be coaches if they could play to an equal degree? Pandolfini has taught countless people the fundamentals of the game, but I don't believe he was ever much of a player.

IMO, you can understand chess and not be much of a player just as you can with most anything else. Not everyone makes a great player, and not everyone makes a great teacher.

Pandolfini suggest to students who are looking for teachers to look for someone at least 400 pts higher than them. So an 1800 tutoring a 1400 or lower sounds just about right.

If the place you use Internet configures the proxy settings automatically, which they probably do since they have a proxy, then you have to deal with the stupidity of many versions of Java.

Even though your browser is autoconfigured, many versions of Java require you to go to the Java console and enter the proxy settings manually. It can still be the autoconfiguration script (usually http://wpad/wpad.dat or http://wpad/proxy.pac), or you can put the address and port of the proxy server in manually.

That takes care of most JavaProxy issues.

yeah, but generally speaking I'm usually at work, and they also outbound filter any ports but the usual port 80/443 and I think it's smart enough that it also only allows HTTP traffic on port 80 so it would be even tough to redirect.

yeah yeah I know I shouldn't be playing at work, however I spend a lot of time there and generally like to take a few breaks in my 14 hour days haha.

I'm actually on ICC right now at home, it's not too bad except for the lack of being able to readily play a decent game.
