I was just about to analyse a few games I had with this opening (1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4 Bc5 4. c3.... or at least something like that!) to see what I'd done right, and what I'd done wrong, and realised I didn't necessarily have to restrict myself to my games.

So if anybody has used this opening in an interesting game, or has some wise words to offer, I'd really appreciate the link/input. From what I know it's not the most exciting opening, but I have to start on something! I'll post a few of my own games later on (once I've checked they aren't too embarassing), if there's any interest.

Did you tried a search in the archives of ChessCafe.com? They often have good articles (Dan Heisman's 'Novice Nook' is one of their best columns). You can also find a small opening's database at chess.about.com.

Here are a couple:

Euwe shows show how fast black can get into trouble in this "boring" opening:

This one has a nice exchange sacrifice by Alekhine. Breyer was good, BTW:

I'm thinking of taking up the Italian game in my rpertoire and so I tried it against the cat.I think it makes an intresting game,but next time I'll stick to the modern approach,7.Bd2,instead of the greco lines Game 497520
I would be intrested to hear any thoughts about how to proceed if black had gone 13....,fxg5
I must admit I have no idea what I would have done in that case ๐Ÿ˜•

i have had many great games with the italian!! it was my fav opening when first starting!! ill tell u a little bit about 1 of my games.

1 .e4 e5, 2. Nf3 Nc6, 3. Bc4... are obiously the main lines. but ill continue from where u left off... bc5 4. c3 Nf6 (is most common here) 5. d4 exd4 6. cxd4 (white has a strong centre).

black has many moves from her but ill continue with a fav of my games.... Bb4+
7. Nc3 (is very risky.. but great attacking move) Nxe4 8. o-o Nxc3 9. bxc3 Bxc3 10.Ba3! (like this move more opposed to Qb3) d5 11. Bb5 Bxa1 (hmm do i smell a blunder?) 12. re1+ Be6 13. Qa4 Qd7 14. Ne4๐Ÿ™‚ Qc8 15. Bxc6+ bxc6 16. Qxc6 +..... and its all over!!!

well there are 2 moves left for black, im feeling gud so ill do both. (both moves actually happened in quite a few games!!) ... Bd7 17. Nxd7+ Kd8 18. Be7+ Ke8 19. Nf6++ (ahh i love it when a plans comes to gether!

what if black played to 16...Kd8 17. Nxf7+! Bxf718. Be7++

i love this opening!!๐Ÿ˜€

Cheers everyone. Looks like I'll be spending several hours huddled over a computer looking at those websites!

I have a collection of about 4000 Giuoco Piano games in both PGN and CBH format, if you want to look through the most common themes.
