Originally posted by GoshenFrench is good and sound, and a great weapon for those with patience. I had trouble against advance variation with Nc3, because i dont like Winnawer, and white almost always took my dark squared bishop, after 1.e4 e6, 2.d4 d5, 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.Bg5 Be7 5.e5 Nd7 after which the position looks like this.
Robbie why not play the french?
6.Bxe7 Qxe7
Black squared bishop is very important piece in French defence, now it is gone and what has black got in return? his queen is a little activated, that is it! So i did not like facing the Nc3 variation of Advance French and did not like the Winnawer either, so it had to go, saying that, you can start with the French and end up with the Sicilian.
Here is the position after 1.e4 c5, 2.Nf3 Nc6, 3.c3 e6, 4.d4 d5, the two are a little related!

Allow me to indulge a little Robbie.
One of my games as white playing the English Attack. I vaguely know what i'm doing in this opening, i think my opponent didn't.

I thought the same when i played it back through, it was nearly a year ago when i played this game. I think this is what i was thinking.
18.Rxh7+ Nxf7 19.Qh2 Bh4 20.Rh1 and the file is blocked.
18.Nc6 gets rid of the bishop and stops that happening.
Originally posted by no1marauderHi, number one, what is the main difference between the e6 and the e5 moves? Is it a matter of taste? does one lead to a more tactical or positional game?

He states that you can outplay very tactical players with subtle moves.
don't say that or I'll stop playing the french!
Originally posted by robbie carrobieIf you play e5, you have to try to control d5 with pieces to prevent White from establishing an outpost there. e6 gives you a more solid setup, but it's a lot more cramped and White's kingside pawn storm is usually coming rather soon.

Hi Robbie.
Do you want the Najdorf by King? (you never replied to my post).
That lad is correct. The Sicilian is a young man's opening.
I'd play the French before a Sicilian these days.
Very good players like Korchnoi can fall back on their experience
and their good positonal sense.
IMO Positonal sense is something once gained is never lost.
Normal muppets like me start to tire after 1-2 hours and
can only play to their former glory days in spurts.
A lot of my old (same age as me) chess team mates from the 80's
have given up the game altogether.
Some were very good players who lived and breathed the game.
The booze and the fags are having an effect. It's crap getting old.
Anyway. Do you want the book - it's good.
if you don't want a freebie from an Edinburger buy that NIC for £2.00
on ebay.

and I'll drop in the Najdorf Book free (offer to Robbie Only).
C'mon Robbie I need the money for booze and fags!!!

Originally posted by GoshenUm, if there is any move that isn't weak it is 1.c4! Maybe not very agressive, but very, very strong. d4 is also nice, but only as a secondary option.
That's bcos you play the weak 1.c4?
But i didn't want to hijack this threat with my trolling, please go on about the sicilian (spit)
