Arnold Denker, the "Dean of American Chess" and US chess champion from 1944 to 1946, enjoyed an outstanding career in the international organisation of chess, and latterly in schools chess. He was a bon vicant, ranconteur and one of the leading US players for decades.

A former boxer and boxing manager, he was known for his direct attacking sytle. Further exploits included a world record by playing 100 opponents in 7hr 33min, shaving off a full hour from the cuban world champion Jose Capablanca.

    Born Feb 1914 - 2005

The game I have in front of me (U.K.Times) is: Denker v Fine, US Championship, Round 7, New York, 1944

"Denker", appropriately, means thinker in German.

"This is the game to which I owe the US title of Champion. Fine and I were leading the tournament and, with Reshevsky out of the competition Fine was favourite. Hence this is my individual encounter was to be my great bid for the title. After dwelling for a long time on the possibilities, I concluded by best weapon suripse.

    Fine suggested 15...g6 as a possibly better alternative. "I believe the move is refuted by 16.Bb5, eg, 16...Qd5, 17.f3, Bc6 18.Ng4 Qd8 19.d5 Bxd5 20.Rxd5 a6 21.dxe6 Qxd1 22. Nf6+ Kh8 23.Rxd1 Rxe6 24.Rd8+ Kg7 25.Bb2 Rxf6 26.Rbd5 and Black is helpless."

"The magnitude of this line is enough to inspire a wholesome awe in the amatuer." - Reuben Fine

Thanks for posting the game. One can be critical of black's play (except it is none other than Reuben Fine) so it is one very good player playing less than optimal moves against a good player.
