Just out of curiosity what is the average rating on RHP?
And where does that place me with my rating?
And another question, a pretty stupid one,
could I challenge myself to a chess match - I know there would be no point but is it possible; if not would it be because of something like what happens when you ring up yourself - busy signal?

Maximum rating (at the moment) 2420, rounded to 2500
2500-500 = 2000
2000/5 = 400
Catergory I = 500-900
Catergory II = 901-1300
Catergory III = 1301-1700
Catergory IV = 1701-2100
Catergory V = 2101-Max
I know it is simplistic, but that might help.

Originally posted by Timothy2005Not quite sure who you're talking to, but the median is indeed the middle number of a set. Taking the movers in the last 100 days, one will find that the middle number is slightly less than 1300, not 1420. I assume he thought the median was the average of the extremes.
Hah, he sure tried to sound fancy though. MEDIAN = middle number of a set I do believe. Not necessarily the AVERAGE.

Minimum rating 500
Maximum rating 2420
500+2420=2920
2920/2=1,460
Considering that I had a typo, I am still closer than you are my friend to the correct answer. Next time you pick a fight, please try to find someone closer to your age, education, experience and intelligence, since you are obviously outmatch by this old man, who just happens to be an accountant.
Originally posted by FersbooYou couldn't even come up with the correct number when I gave you the definition, and explained exactly what you were doing wrong? What you just gave me is not a median. Since I gave you a definition, and you still failed to get it right, I don't know if you'll ever get it. Please actually read my post this time. When I tell you what not to do, and you do it anyway, it indicates that you've not read what I've written.

What you're doing: finding the average of the two extremes. What a median is: The number in a set that has an equal numbers above it as below it. There is a difference. In fact, judging by how much our answers vary, it's quite a large one.
And you try to tell me not to pick a fight with someone of higher experience and intelligence. I've had a year of high school math, and already have a far greater grasp on basic statistics than you do. If you're an account, you've clearly forgotten most of your training.

Given a large enough population, and reason to believe that the ratings are normally distributed, it might prove to be close to the mean.
Though, being that the median of active players is 1291, is VERY unlikely that the mean of all players could be substantially higher. Certainly not over 1400.
