I got out the statistic book this morning before leaving for work and started to respond, realized my mistake. That is what the nevermind post is.

I disagree with the bit about being schooled by the schoolkid though. I wasn ...[text shortened]... e players. I was using Minimum and Maximum ratings. Makes me feel a little better.

😛

😀
You were using the wrong minimum anyway, IMO. 500 is pretty much reserved for people who are after getting the boot.

True, there are only 5 individuals when I checked this morning with a 500 rating. There are however a few individuals in that general area.

I wonder if it is possible for RHP to provide access to some of the raw data for some numbers to be collected.

I once had a rating of 525 😳

Cool. Now, can you answer Bad Wolf's original question, what is the average rating, with the added caveat that we are looking only at the active players that do not have proisional rankings?

Don't bother. The median is going to be really close to the mean in such a large set of numbers.

I do believe that Coco has already found the MEDIAN and is now looking for the AVERAGE.

Yup, that's what I said. He shouldn't bother finding the mean (which is a "fancy" word for the average), because he's already found the median, and it will be very similar.

I must have a block when I read what you write.

It seems to me that if Bad wolf finds out he is average, that will make him unique 🙂

The MEAN of a set of numbers is the sum of all the numbers divided by how many numbers there are in a set. Also known as the AVERAGE.
The MEDIAN of a set of numbers is the middle number, or if there are an even number of numbers in the set, the mean of the two middle numbers.
The MODE of a set of numbers is the most frequently occuring number in the set. There can be multiple modes.

Take that! And for your info, I'm only almost 14.

The highest rating + the lowest rating is definitely NOT the mean uless RHP has only 2 players.

Minimum rating 500

Maximum rating 2420

500+2420=2920

2920/2=1,460

This is an aproximation of the median when you have too much data.
Real median would be the average of all the different rate represented. (no matter how much we get) . With a quick look I don't see too much 500 ish rated, but for the other, (600, 700 ...), with 150 000 people, i guess every rates is represented at least once, so that calcul might be not too far from the real median. i wud say a bit over 1460. For the average, we could get and approximation with a degree of precision by making random pick and statistic calcul, like we do in a surveys.
