Normally, how long will it take for an absolute beginner of average intelligence and not a chess prodigy, to reach 1200-1300 rating?

1200 - 1300 is the average for most players, right?

😀
As a beginner it only took me about 20 games to be well above average
after about a 1000 games I discovered it is easier to tumble to below average than consistently play at above average rating.
My only tip would be if ratings matter you need to play quality rather than quantity so keep your gameload below 20 ongoing games

Play a few, learn from your mistakes and study so you know what your mistakes are. There's lots of chess site references here if you look for them.

Good luck.

I think you should aim at 1500. Although that's not the average of this site, its a decent rating and you can give most players trouble.

15% of the chess players in the World are over 1800. Only 15%.

This numbers are from 2002 though, but even if you look on rhp, from the 9000 some players on here, like 300-400 are above 1800.

Read one good general chess book (beginners book) and you'll hit 13-1500 easy.

Hi Wayne, don't do what I did when I first started here I did not appreciate that there is a huge difference between cc (correspondence chess) and otb (or live internet) chess. I originally treated it as live chess and just looked at my position and moved, so in effect it was live versus cc. Use the analye board facility extensively, to look at the future moves and positions not just of your opportunities but also your opponent's, have a second look just before completing your move (even now occassionally I will make a blunder which is ridicleous on here) and at least start off my playing lesser quality games (spend more time on them) rather than making errors in lots of games. But the best way of getting your rating up is to analyse games where it went wrong and understand why you lost.

Thanks for the advice everybody. I love the game and want to be much better at it. I've only been playing sunce Sept. of 05, so I'm still a beginner.

Take some time at this chess site to get strong with the basics. It's free, so you won't need to pick a book up if you don't want. If you follow it all you will get a bit better, and notice it.
