    I'll ask him - I'm not scared of asking anyone anything.

    I'm up for some abrasive stories and rude jokes.

    Note to self: keep on avoiding this chess forum -- will only make you sad. How can so many people (like Robbie) without an intellectual clue or education be so very much superior in analysing and mastering chess moves and chess theory? damn, makes me sad already ...

    oh, well ... I'll just keep pushing the wood and hope something sticks.

    Here's the poop on why cut and paste in most instances on this sort of site shouldn't cause a copyright problem. The quotations are most likely, if limited enough, a fair use of the original (source: the US Copyright Office -- otherwise known as the horse's mouth):

    <<One of the more important limitations on copyrights is the doctrine of “fair use.” Although fair use was not mentioned in the previous copyright law, the doctrine has developed through a substantial number of court decisions over the years. This doctrine has been codified in section 107 of the present copyright law.

    Section 107 contains a list of the various purposes for which the reproduction of a particular work may be considered “fair,” such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research. Section 107 also sets out four factors to be considered in determining whether or not a particular use is fair:

    the purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes;

    the nature of the copyrighted work;

    amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole; and

    the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work.

    The distinction between “fair use” and infringement may be unclear and not easily defined. There is no specific number of words, lines, or notes that may safely be taken without permission. Acknowledging the source of the copyrighted material does not substitute for obtaining permission.

    The 1961 Report of the Register of Copyrights on the General Revision of the U.S. Copyright Law cites examples of activities that courts have regarded as fair use: “quotation of excerpts in a review or criticism for purposes of illustration or comment; quotation of short passages in a scholarly or technical work, for illustration or clarification of the author's observations; use in a parody of some of the content of the work parodied; summary of an address or article, with brief quotations, in a news report; reproduction by a library of a portion of a work to replace part of a damaged copy; reproduction by a teacher or student of a small part of a work to illustrate a lesson; reproduction of a work in legislative or judicial proceedings or reports; incidental and fortuitous reproduction, in a newsreel or broadcast, of a work located in the scene of an event being reported.”

    Copyright protects the particular way an author has expressed himself; it does not extend to any ideas, systems, or factual information conveyed in the work. >>

    Thanks for that Scriabin, very useful.

    I would like to add that Copyright Laws vary from country to country; from what I recall of the Media Law classes (as part of my Journalism degree course) much of what Scriabin states is similar to Scottish Copyright Law, but certainly interpretations of these laws will also vary widely. (Think of the divorce courts and how some people file for divorce in a more 'friendly' part of the world whenever possible).

    The teaching part of the 'fair use' defence should also be noted - you couldn't really just steal whatever you liked and automatically say, "Oh, I was just using it to teach other members of the RHP site!" and expect the reply, "Ok, no problem, help yourself!" : )

    I went to the extreme when writing my book and cleared EVERY single quote I used (even single sentences) with the publishers/copyright holders, because as a COMMERCIAL enterprise I didn't want/couldn't afford ANY problems with copyright. As Scriabin says, it's not the clearest-cut of legal matters.

    Although Scriabin is also perfectly correct when he states that acknowledging the source of material doesn't protect you from claims of copyright infringement, I would add that it is at the very least a common courtesy to do so. Again, this isn't intended as a slap-down of anyone who didn't know about these things : )

    why you ungrateful wretch, i have been a spiritual father to you, a light shining in a dark place, a guru, a mentor and a source of infinite wisdom, how it tortures my soul to read such inflammatory words constituting unmitigated defamation of character....

    the reason i am a chess giant is quite elementary my dear Scriabin, natural skill, ability and technique! stuff like that cannot be taught, search as you may through the plethora of chess literature, it cannot be fathomed nor found but in the soul of the true devotee and arteest!😉
