It's my f7 square I have problems with. I always look at it when playing black and go Arrrrgghh!!!
Has anyone got some helpful advice here?
1.e4 e6
Most French Defence games continue 2.d4 d5.
It's a different type of game than the sort you get after 1.e4 e5, one where tactics are less common until later in the game.
If you want to play 1.e4 e5 games, then I suggest you play the two knights defence - 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Nf6. Many people will then play 4.Ng5, which is hitting the f7 square you are so scared of, but Black has a couple of good replies, e.g. 4...d5 5.exd5 Na5 (NOT 5. ... Nxd5 - you will lose horribly if you play this!) 6.Bb5+ c6 7.dxc6 bxc6 when Black has a pretty good attack at the cost of a pawn.

What's your prefered opening for black to play, when white plays the following..........
1) e4
2) B-c4
3) Ng-f3
1. e4 e5
2. Bc4 Nf6
3. Nf3...
Either 3...Nc6 (transposing into the 2 knights defence) or 3...Nxe4 should be OK, although it can get quite complex. A nice little miniature here: Game 2750035. Short, but not entirely comfortable!
Thanks everyone. I'll just use the french for now, while I study up on the rest of your advice.
Much appreciated. 🙂.
I see someone else has some interest, so I hope it's alright to put part of a PM here>
