Why is it at Blitz chess I can't even get a rating above 1400 no matter how hard I try? π
Originally posted by MislavThis is pretty obvious as in blitz there's not the extra time to think that you have on correspondence chess, hence you miss some combinations/breaking moves that you would spot when given enough time to think.

Most of my blitz games are decided by a single shot combination which wins material. then the efficient whittling down of material. Thus there are two stages in the game. the reduction in material, of course, can only be done when one is ahead. therefore, blitz depends on being alert to the possiblity of simple combinations overlooked by your opponent. Sometimes it's just a matter of picking up a hanging piece or pawn. Younger players are usually better in this atmosphere.
Don't worry about blitz right now. My OTB rating is 1700+ and my 30 min fun rating at that same club is 1560 will everyone else around my strengh during regular controls is at 1800+.... With blitz, openings are more important since if you know the openings well u can spit the move out quickly without thinking and still have decent time left. Also intution plays a major role in blitz since u don't have time to calculate properly. That's why lots of master say worry about standard control games and the blitz will take care of itself.
The role of pure visual/spatial intelligence in blitz is underrated. I'm very logical, and when I play chess I'm an absolutely determined calculator, but my visual observation skills are somewhat low. I get into horrible time trouble in blitz games because, optically, I'm inferior; I don't "see the whole board;" I'm thinking ahead instead of looking. Then I realize I need to look more to see what I missed, which means I lose enormous amounts of time.

Where do you play? In Yahoo im between 1500-1600, chess21 1900, playchess 1800. Yahoo has sooo many cheaters, a quarter of your opponents use engines.
I'm up and down from 1450 to 1650, then I play 10 Blitz games on ICC and voila, I almost reach an 1800 rating (high 1700's) in the so called site with the best players online. I beat an 1800 and 1900 player there for example. These cheaters do more then cheat, they can damage spirits of players who work hard and think they never improve due to the cheating. π YAHOO SUCKS!
Originally posted by ExiledDon't think like that. I play online to improve my OTB standard (FOR MY CLUB!) which is exactly what's happened. Ok i loose a lot of online games but i've scored 8/10 (W7 D2 L1) this season which would never have happened had i not played online so much. Internet ratings are a nice feature but they are no substitute for a REAL rating. Join a club, im sure you'd do great!
