I have always been under the impression that in blitz chess, the touch move rule doesn't apply. Your move is complete when you punch the clock. Now i just read that your move is complete when you let go the piece. Time and time again i have played people who move a piece, then think better of it, move another piece then punch their clock and i've done the same. Anyone out there know the answer to this?

From what I hear from tournaments like state and nationals, it's clock move. I'm not completely sure but I'm sure most people play that way.

According to the FIDE rules of Rapid Play (which are the same as the Blitz rules with one exception not relevant here):

B2. Play shall be governed by the FIDE Laws of Chess, except where they are overridden by the following Laws of Rapidplay.

B5. The arbiter shall make a ruling according to Article 4 (The act of moving pieces), only if requested to do so by one or both players.

From that it appears that the touch move rule can be effectively waived by the players, and if there is no arbiter at all, I presume it doesn't apply.

In my tournaments I used to play in , the rule was called TouchMoveTouchTake. If you touch your piece , you have to move it , if you touch your opponent's piece , you have to take it if possible otherwise you can touch another piece , if you let go of a piece , you leave it where it is and punch the clock , if your king is in check but you touch another piece , you have to take the checking piece with the piece you touched at the first place or block check with the piece you first touched with , if not possible , you can do something else , if you touch more than three pieces that cannot block check if you're in check , you automaticlly lose the game , the three illegal move rule .
If you make three illegal moves during a game , you lose the game.

I've never watched a blitz game, but I have wondered what is done when a piece is placed sloppily such that it overlaps two (or four) squares.
