I can't comment on that book, sorry. But I would imagine that at least the games are interesting, I have Art of the Sacrifice by Spielmann and I have found it very interesting.

Thanks everyone for opinions!
Apparently, Eric Schiller is not a top chess author according to RHP members (and not only them) 🙂

Eric Schiller might be the only guy in America (at least among chess players) with a lower approval-rating than the Governor of Illinios who allegedly tried to "sell" Barack Obama's Senate seat to the highest bidder.

Most,if not all of Schiller's books are total garbage. Most of them are just downloads of analysis from various sources that he seldom,of ever critically checks. I remember his most famous howler in his book on the Tarrasch defense where he asserts one side is dead lost, not noticing that that side has a mate in 2! It is neck and neck who is the worst chess author of our generation-Raymond Keene or Schiller. The worst of all time-Franklin K.Young, hands down.

depends who you compare him too I suppose.

He's strong compared to me for example but by most standards Schiller is not particularly good. Certainly not IM strength or close.

I enjoyed Schiller's "Unorthodox Chess Openings" even though its pure trash as far as the analysis goes. Lots of funny lines.
It's full of Shillerisms (a term meaning errors, mistakes misleading facts and nonsense) I felt bad when I gave my to the charity shop as if they sold it for a £1 it'd be overpriced.

A friend of mine bought "World Champion Openings" - he's about 1600-1700 ELO OTB...thus, the only level we share regarding "chess knowledge" is the information that Schilling's publications are consistently mediocre.

I hold "World Champion Openings" now. It saved my friend from the ignominy of getting rid of it by auctioning it on eBay for a penny, and paying the costs of postage & packaging himself.

It doesn't hold anything other than lines, which I could check out on the "eudesign/chessops" site for free - or alternatively, buy a better opening book (hello Amazon.co.uk)

The worst part about Eric Schiller is that he still publishes book despite knowing that he sucks. Don't you think if you got this many crappy reviews for what you've done, then you'd can yourself? He's got no shame, and obviously neither does any publisher that has the balls to print his treewasting horse crap.

The problem is that there are people who buy these crappy books - otherwise publishers would not publish them.

Indeed. Schiller prays on the beginning chess players who don't know any better! 🙁

Schiller definitely preys on the beginning chess player. He may also pray that he'll always have that customer base. 🙂
