That's great news! I like the Haslinger family, though I don't think I've ever met Stewart. He's had some very interesting games in the last few news and I'll be rooting for him to win the tournament this year.

That's weird, the ECF site has this as a win for Gordon, with Black resigning after 42.Kg1. This seems reasonable as after 42. ... Kg8, 43.Qxg7 is mate, as is 43.e8=Q, 43.e8=R and 43.Rf8, surely Gordon wouldn't have missed all four of the mate in ones!

The guy relaying them on Playchess must be a practical joker or he just made up the pgn. Since Playchess have the British Championships in the events, one would have thought that the top GMs would be involved in producing the games.

I spoke to a sysop on Playchess who said that the pgn is coming from the BCF so there must be an error on the BCF's part.

Sounds like padding to me.

Stewart is indeed a fine player. I know him quite well since he used to be in a team I captained. I think that he would probably already be a GM but for his ill health.

I read on the ECF news site that he obtained his third GM norm last month at the South Wales International tournament in Newport. All he needs now is to get his performance rating over 2500, which should be pretty easy - he may even do it at the British.

Jack Rudd stomped all over Danny Gormally today (http://www.bcfservices.org.uk/livechess/british/2007/live_games.htm).

I thought Gormally must have something up his sleeve as he went on a pawn snatching spree with his queen, leaving his king to look after itself; but no, he simply resigned. It looked like a very simple and obvious attack by Rudd.

Gormally's premature departure from the Turin Olympiad is a lesson for all chess players to stay away from alcohol. On the subject of Rudd vs Gormally he was given a rude awakening.

Or if you can't stay away from alcohol, then at least stay away from flirty Australian chess players.

Yes, that's right. These days you only have to be at the appointed rating (2400 for an IM, 2500 for a GM) for a nanosecond for it to count. The reasoning behind this I believe is to stop people pulling out of tournaments halfway through to 'protect' their norms.
This is correct - Jacob got his GM title in round 3 of the British.

His demolition of Pert a couple of rounds ago is worth a look.

And he's back in front after today on 7.5/9.

When did an English player actually win the British?

Oh I remember that, that chick was pretty hot. Like a 7. 😛

The last one was Julian Hodgson in 2000.

Danny's feeling pretty demoralised these days. Even I managed to beat him quite recently.

Gormally lost to someone graded 192 today (Simon Fowler). He's become the tournament whipping boy, I wish I was playing him tomorrow!

The game between Aagard and Stephen Gordon is stuck at move 41 (with Black to move) on the live games website. I suspect Aagard may have resigned as even I could win for Black in that position. I think Haslinger may lose as well (though a draw is just as likely), in which case there could be several players in with a chance of winning the tournament tomorrow!
