Y'know I was just wondering about the same thing. 40,000 moves is a hell lot of moves. But you'd be surprised, some people never learn. In the other thread, someone asked the question if you need to be a genius to be good in chess. I think being a genius does help a lot, but attitude is a bigger help. Some people have the habit of analysing their finished games to find out where they went wrong; or what else could have been done better. It's through such process that they get to learn more, so that when they are faced with similar type of situations in the future, they'll know how to handle the problem.

My mother has migrated to Canada for almost 30 years now, but her English is still like 30 years ago. Some people are just not particularly interested in details, you see.

But hey, at least he is asking the question now. So I guess that is a good sign. At least he has learned something new. The next time he gets a same ending, he'll know what to do...... or at least we hope so!

I have to agree with the "you can't ask advice" statement. Especially from this site. It's like having an army hidden behind you on your side of the board. Sure, it's just a matter of honor, but I thought that was the whole point here. I'd say swallow the question, use your Analyze Board feature, and figure it out for yourself. And anyone claiming you can't win? Well spank 'em!

Its possible he plays openings where rook endings dont typically occur?

More likely, middlegames where rook endings don't typically appear! 😵

40,000 moves without a single rook ending is a bit difficult to believe. And bear in mind that he might be playing over the board, as well as on other online sites. So in fact, he might have made many more moves than 40,000 on here. I think it's more likely that he suddenly realised that after making so many moves in so many games, he has experienced this rook ending several times already; so much so that no matter how lazy he is to find out how to handle such position, he had 'no choice' but to learn! Hence this thread!

Out of his 1100 odd games it is a little hard to believe he hasnt come across one before although theres a few factors to take in. The openings, do they normally get rook endings? His middle game play....some players very rarely see endgames because they like to decide it in the middle game for better or worse....id imagine 1300's who decide to play razor sharp lines wont see many endings someone will blunder long before, the higher up you go in ratings the more chances there are of coming out of sharp positions and into ending......not to mention that most people would just resign when a rook down.

You could well be right that hes seen the position before and hasnt looked it up, but I cant see anyone being in a K+R vs K endgame in correspondence chess and not looking it up to see if its a won game. Maybe he will shed some light on this 🙂
