I am fairly new here but I think you have to send your message/comment when you make your move; if you want to chat you can also use the message button which you see once you click on full profile

@Plater; Years ago I use to play chess at ' Chess maniacs' and we use to chat no matter who's move was.

As you have mentioned, you can only send a message to your opponent along with your move in a game, when using the 'in game' message feature. But there is also another messaging option.

You can send a message to every member of this site at any time, by using the message option found on their profile page. This option does not require having a game in progress with them.

I believe chatting is available on the live board on this site. I wouldn’t consider two-way chat appropriate on a turn-based chess program unless it was tied to the actual board to follow its playing time-cycle.

I think it would also open the door to abuse in some instances. (For example an opponent leaving messages like "Hurry up!" when it wasn't their turn).

Indeed! That could become quite irritating. I like the way it is set up now.

Perhaps it's wise to keep all chat to a minimum until your game is finished. This would minimize the risk of complaints and / or confusion regarding what you can say, and when.

When I was competing here, I welcomed post-game analysis and chat and enjoyed both but found chatting during a rated game to be a distraction.

Nothing like that. It was burnout. 12+ years at ICCF and a decade here on RHP, and I needed a break. Still dabbling in tactics exercises. I might be back someday - only time will tell...๐Ÿ˜

I'm not much into in-game chat myself, but I agree with what Ghost wrote above, along the lines that some might misuse it in a way analogous to kicking your opponent in the shins to harass and distract them.

In general, I find in-game chat distracting -- but I can see how some might like it as some kind of analogue to a coffee-house chess experience.

@Arkturos ; If is possible,it's up to the person to respond or not just like is at present.

You have to actually play chess first๐Ÿ˜‡.

Thank you, Saint Mike. Prepping to get back in the game is on my list, but I'm such a scattered fellow. I did upgrade my chess software recently with the intention of practicing against an engine for a little before starting any new games against (presumably) humans.

I’ll play you non rated as long as it’s no more than 1 -3 if you like as long as no engines.
