Yes, but "Open" means that the tournament is open to everybody. E.g. the US Open golf tournament is open to anyone, not just US players.

At the Senior Open in Michigan my friend Bob was playing a guy on board 1. I went into the bathroom to take a leak and saw Bob's opponent come out of a stall and return to the game w/o washing his hands. When I saw him fingering the chess pieces and then Bob touching them it grossed me out.

Bob and I went to lunch later and I suggested we wash our hands before eating - didn't tell him what I'd seen.
