So, I was lying in bed last night, waiting to drift off as usual and this silly thought crept into my head.... The chess openings/terms are like some kind of "magic spell names"... I could imagine two wizards having a supernatural battle, conjuring and nullifying each others spells... Accelerated Dragons, being counteracted by Maroczy Binds, and casting spells such as Stonewall Defences, Grob's Attack, the Nimzowitsch Defence etc. And of course some mindblowing super-spells with names like Philidor's Legacy, Pawn Storms, Zwischenzug etc. Sorry for bringing this pointless discussion up, but it got stuck in my head last night and laughed myself to sleep 🙂

It's like not sleeping well because you are composing and resolving problems with tactical combinations while dreaming after spending way too much time on chess tactics server.

I think you maybe, like almost all of us on rhp play too much, so the result is this: 🙄

Nice analogy with wizard and spells though, chess reminds on it indeed...

I agree with you. A lot of what chess is about is cool as hell when you think about it abstractly. Its easy to think of it in mechanical terms since computers are so prevalent today, but there is a artistic side to chess that is often overlooked.

The names of openings are really neat and for such a simple game there is a whole ancient world built around it.

Also, games with carved pieces started out because people used to carry around talismans and miniature idols for good luck. So there is a bit of magic to the game. Its like playing with fate and invoking the power of the gods. 😉

You have not read about a wizard's dual. The ones I have read about lasted for about three rounds. I think that Nystire "the Fox" killed a lord mage in three or four rounds and Nystire was killed in three rounds? Too bad I really like that Nystire character.

I see another kind of magic just before sleep: the finish of my game against a hand-held chess opponent.

It's a smothered mate theme.

That's funny -- I've always thought the lex of chess had so much more in common with sex since the object is to mate: prophylaxis, penetration, domination, the Queen's Indian, fianchettoing the bishop, Boleslavski, the Hedgehog, etc.

This is weird....

Myself and my wife called to her parents last night, and there was a paper recycle bag in the kitchen (waiting to go out next day). Well, I spotted a few old books in the bag belonging to my wifes brother, had a browse to see if there was anything that i'd like...

5 books...

And I wrote this topic before I even heard of the books, strange?!

Anyhooo, point being that I'm not the only person who decided there's a link between the two.
