It's the title of a new book by Jennifer Shahade. I'm wondering who has read it, and what he or she thinks about the book.

And please no garbage like:

The book was printed on bark.

bitch n. a malicious, bad-tempered, or aggressive woman

The subject of the book, according to a handful of reviews concerns, at least in part, the sexism that runs rampant in chess circles, as in society at large, but perhaps it is a little worse in chess circles. Even this glowing review at amazon.com reflects a fundamentally sexist attitude:

"This book rocks!!!, October 14, 2005

Hot is one word to describe Chess Bitch by Jennifer Shahade. Pioneering is another word. I suggest this beautifully written book to everyone. Besides, the pictures of the author are worth the price alone! Ay, caliente!"

Certainly the response to this thread so far reveals another form of sexism.

I guess most of you guys are afraid of this book.

*sigh* Where's the Contumelious Clan when they are sorely needed?

I thought it was going to be the larger-than-life exploits of an aggressive leather-bar-frequenting chess player as recounted by his more passive partner or "chess bitch". I'm so seldom right.

But I bet you're happy in your own little way...

Yes I have read it.
It is a great book.
But I am biased since chapter 12 is about me.

Thanks Angela.

I may finally break my three year boycott of Amazon to buy both Chess Bitch and Breaking Through. I'd say from other things that I've read that Shahade is leagues better as a writer than both Polgar and Paul Truong combined. Nevertheless, I think it will be interesting and useful to compare the perspectives of Polgar and Shahade on gender issues in chess.
