I'm looking to purchase a couple of books in order to try to develop my game. Can anybody recommend some? I'm UK-based but do have internet access.

The Amateur's Mind - Silman
Reassess Your Chess - Silman
Understanding Chess Move by Move - Nunn
1001 Winning Chess Sacrifices and Combinations - Reinfeld
1001 Brillian Ways To Checkmate - Reinfeld
Modern Chess Openings - de Firmian (for opening lines)
My system - Nimzowitsch

There you have some books.
Browse this forum a bit, questions about books have been asked before. You'll prolly have to go back up to page 5 or so,I think.

Excellant recommendations,Sir Lose! I would also suggest, Captain, that you invest in a couple of good endgame books,as that is the most important part of the game,IMNSHO. I recommend Dvoretsky's Endgame Manual, which just came out,and is excellant. Alburt's Just The facts is also VG.

just my opinion but Re-assess your Chess and The Amateur Mind are fairly advanced for someone rated 1100. At that level i'd recommend concentrating mainly on elementary tactics.
I've found this Amazon list to be pretty much on the money:

Thanks for your input. I've purchased a couple of books and some software now.
In response to your comment about my rating. I used to play for the school at county level but that was 32 years ago so I'm a proficient player, however the game has moved on since I last played.
If you don't play against better player and read advanced books, then you can't seriously expect to improve. 😀

If you're interested in Chess software as well, I cannot recommend Chess Strategy Course - Aleksey Bartashnikov strongly enough. It comes in a series of three I believe. I'm going over the first again now, though it would be a great help to any skill level. It has example games and explains thing well. You can grab it over at www.chessbase.com, though you do need fritz or one of the other programs to run it. It's excellent though 😉.

The book that helped me the most is chess in a nutshell by reinfeld
chapters like :the center and its implications " sound theory rather then explaining moves
