Thanks for the info, but there are actually a lot. I was looking at http://www.eastbaychess.com/schedule.php and they seem like a good club. At least they have a decent website! It seems that most clubs don't even bother. Is this usually the case?
BTW: Can rated games be played at clubs without a tournament?

if we have a witness to the event, and we agree on it, and we play by uscf rules, can we play a rated game in a club, and have it logged at some official location or something...?
Originally posted by exigentskySorry, you said Fremont, not Bay Area. I've been in SF exactly once.

Yes, it seems that chess organizations in general has been retarded in terms of web presence. For several years I have offered free web hosting for Michigan clubs and have not had one taker.
Yes, you can play a rated match. All you need is a certified Tournament Director to submit the report. There are restrictions:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
From http://www.swissperfect.com/handbook/USCFrating.htm
# Matches. Individual matches are rated with the following restrictions:
1. Both players involved must be rated, with the difference in ratings not to exceed 400 points (the latest published rating prior to the match will be used for calculating the rating difference). Match reports not conforming to this regulation will be returned.
2. Match reports must be validated by a certified tournament director, or the players must sign a notarized affidavit.
3. The maximum rating change allowed as a result of a match is 50 points.
4. No player may go up or down more than 200 rating points within a three-year period solely as a result of Match play.
5. Match results may not be taken into account when a player is being considered for an invitational tournament unless those results are subsequently confirmed in tournament play.
6. Equations I and II (see "5. Equations"😉 are used to rate matches.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So it seems you must already have a rating to play a match. Hope this helps.
