With chess you hold the outcome in your hands.
As for poker the outcome does not solely depend on how you play.
I think they are two different things. People play poker to win money.
Have you ever heard of a rich chess player.
How much money could you seriously make from chess? I'm talking about the average person here not some super GM.
As ...[text shortened]... y give out prizes, books etc... That's not gambling really. You aren't winning no ones money.
So, your religion holds that it is OK to take a worse player's money in a game of skill in which you hold the outcome in your hands, but it is not OK to take their money in a game in which the worse player has at least a chance to win? That's twisted.
Further, it's not even true that you hold the outcome of a chess game entirely in your hands.

Nor does it in chess. Just look at the theory behind the rating system.

The average professional poker player lives day to day. Very few actually have any money.
How much money could you seriously make from chess?
Why is this at issue? Does your religion permit gambling provided you can't make much money from it?

Different people consider different things gambling.
I consider poker gambling and a lot of people do.
But chess = gambling? Come on.
Someone says poker and you think gambling, money.
Somone says chess you think intelligent and skill.
Beside saying don't gamble, religion has nothing else to do with this issue.
And those people who work hard make money and gamble it all away on weekends and then cry about it. I don't feel sorry for them. Live with your choices.

But I'm trying to figure out the propositional content of this claim.
What constitutes gambling, according to your religion? Or does it leave it to its adherents to define gambling as they wish, as long as they don't participate in whatever they define gambling to be?
If you can't answer this, then you don't really understand that which you claim to believe. How can you adhere to the tenets of a religion if you don't know the referents of their terms?

Does your religion appeal to social stereotypes to determine what constitutes gambling?
If investing in the stock market was widely considered to be gambling, would your religion thus prohibit it?
But chess = gambling? Come on.
How is entering a chess tournament for money different from entering a poker tournament for money? In both, the best players are likely to win the most, although there is a chance that weaker players can also win. Further, most people who enter will lose their money to better players in both games.

I consider poker gambling hence I do not play it. To me chess isn't gambling so I play chess.
We should open up a new thread for this. See what people think.

That is, your religion doesn't specify what constitutes gambling, or provide a decision procedure for determining whether some activity constitutes gambling?
For example, if nobody considered poker to be gambling, would your religion allow it?

As you know there are tons of distinct division in different religious. Lot of different christians, muslims etc...
Anyways for our religion women were suppose to cover their heads, stay at home, etc... a long time ago. Then they changed it. They changed a lot of other things also as time required. It's always changing.
For my religion, we have a living person who we follow like a king and when time requires it he will change the rule as he sees fit. Obviously when 1 income could not support a household, they said it was okay for women to get an education and go work.
So basically what i'm saying is that gambling is prohibited for us. What you consider gambling is I guess up to you.
We aren't allowed to eat pork. I ate pork by mistake when I was younger during a school picnic. That's not bad since I didn't know. If I did know and ate it then it would have been wrong.
So ya. That's all I got to say about that.
Religion is a faith. You can't look at it logically, syllogisms, defining terms, etc. There are enough people around who think killing people is ok as long as certain religious criteria are met. The old "end justifies the means" reasoning. So playing or not playing chess is the least of our worries. To people of faith, the next world is more important, anyway. Do you think they play chess in heaven? Are games mentioned in any of the Holy books of any religion? Probably not. The only faith i have at the moment is "hurting children" is wrong. Since playing chess in the normal way helps children (mentally) I think it's good. If they bet a lot of money on the outcome, that would be another matter. I heard someone on tv who had arranged a bombing outside a cafe where the "enemy" patronized. When it was pointed out that some kids would be passing by at the time, he said that was ok, as long as the soldiers were killed. Or an airforce bombs a house where a suspect is and they know there are children inside, but it's worth it to get the suspect. There's something wrong with that kind of thinking, but it seems to be everywhere. God help us.
Originally posted by RahimKI believe that sometimes people just get "burned out". They take it seriously, and then for some reason, just don't want to play. It's happened to me. I recommend you relax, take a two or three month break, and then maybe play a few casual blitz games (no serious games). If you don't feel the urge to continue to atleast play casually, you may really want to quit and find some new hobby.
I take chess seriously. Sure it's fun but I need to see improvement.
Look at my Rhp rating. The first was me messing around not caring. The second part with the big rise is me playing "Chess seriously". My OTB rating has also shot up to it's new high.
No point in playing and not improving.
