http://chess.emrald.net/index.php - it has a lot of good tactics and some such. chessgames.com - classic games. academicchess.com - a good learning tool

Forget the websites the best way to learn is play as much as possible.

Rubbish. Study and play a lot - you'll never learn from your mistakes unless you can grasp where you went wrong. www.chesstactics.org is the best around.

totalchess.com is good but not free. improveyourchess.com is another one
