Chess Olympiad: Indian men humble Holland
Thursday, 21 October , 2004, 06:18
Mallorca, Spain: Powered by Viswanathan Anand and the in-form Surya Shekhar Ganguly, Indian men humbled Holland 3-1 in the sixth round of the 36th Chess Olympiad in progress here at Fran Casino.
The Indians, in the third spot currently, trail leaders Ukraine, who moved to 19 points after grounding the talented Azerbaijanis 2.5-1.5 , by two points.
Despite the fine showing by Anand and his teammates, it was top seed and defending champion Russia who caught everyone's fancy on the day as Peter Svidler took charge of the second board and guided his side to a highly impressive 3.5-0.5 triumph over Israel.
Svidler, highly regarded the world over, was not present in Mallorca for the first few rounds and his arrival on Tuesday gave Russia, winner of the last six Olympiads, the momentum it was lacking thus far.
India are now at level pegging with Bulgaria at the third spot on 17 points.
Israel, Spain A, Armenia and Azerbaijan are in joint fifth place on 16.5 five while Slovakia, Georgia, France, Poland and Cuba are clubbed together, tallying an identical 15.5 points apiece.
Significantly, India is the only team in the Olympiad to have won all its matches. Even Ukraine has conceded a draw to Israel while the Russians were tamed by the leaders in the fourth round.
