I'm looking for a freeware chess program where i can play against the computer or a friend. I've been trying to find such a program on the internet, however, many of the terms used I am not farmiliar with (ie: chess engine winboard???) Could anyone give me some guidance of what programs are good? Also, if there is a website that links to many different chess programs that are out there?? Thanks. Phil
Well If you really want a good program you should just buy it. But, there are some sites where you can download demos, etc. Or you could get the full version off Kazaa. But not always safe. If you go to

Has a computer prog you can download or practice on. Its not that good though.

Apart from the chess playing engines you can get database S/W CB light from www.Chessbase.com.
ChessAssistant.com is another site.
As an owner of Fritz, Chess Assistant and Bookup, I have to say that you can get software that is almost as good or better for free. I'm talking about open source, of course.
Pick up a copy of Arena (winboard compatible program), with Ruffian & Crafty 19.10 and you have opponents that can kick your a**. Throw in SCID, the open source chess database, with its library of 1 million games, plus download the 5 piece endgame tablebases from Bob Hyatt's site, and you've got a pretty good starter set for some serious training.
The one thing this doesn't get you is chess smarts. For that you'll have to turn to books (unless you are the second coming of Capablanca).
