I need some chess software either free or commercial to do the following -

It should be able to -
a. load my completed games in PGN format
b. replay any of my games
c. annotate my moves and display the same when I replay the game and it is on that move.

Any suggestions? Thanks.

The full version comes with Chess Tiger, Crafty, and Ruffian.

By the way, some excellent FREE software may also be found at

I suggest you Arena: http://www.playwitharena.com/
wonderful free windows-software that does what you want and much more. you can use many different engines (carfty, Ruffian, SOS, ...) under Arena, some of them are inculded in the setup.
It's availiable in many languanges.
The website is not very good, but the software is!

For database functions, ChessBase Light and Chess Assiatant Light are both execellent (and free). They both have limits on the size of database they handle, but are fine for personal games. After you use on for a while, you may find the $125 for the full version is a worthwhile expense. Both support analysis engines.

Arena will give access to many more engines, the ability to play against the engines, and to pit the engines against each other. It can work with PGN files, but is much more limited than CB and CA in db features (although it lacks the size restrictions of the light versions of those programs).

If you want quality engine analysis that can run itself while you sleep, nothing comes close to Fritz and family (Hiarcs, Junior, Shredder, etc.). These also have many of the db functions you'll want. It may be the best $40 you can spend on chess.

You might also look at Chess Informant Expert for both database and analysis. A lite version is available for free, and the full version costs much less than CB and CA. It supports several engines (in theory all UCI engines are supported, but some seem to work better than others). I think there is a lot to be said for Informant's code system, and only CIE permits editing games using this code.

Thanks guys for all the useful information. For now, I would like to go for Fritz. However, when I went to their site I saw another product named 'Fritz 8 Champion Edition from Chessbase'. Is this the same? I have a PC with Windows XP and 256 MB RAM and 100 GB disk space. Please suggest.

Fritz 8 championship edition is the latest version of Fritz. It is the version that took on Garry Kasparov in the Man vs. Machine WC in November 2003.

I suggest take a long hard look at CA8, it is quite a bit more money them Fritz 8, But also comes with a lot more. Its engines is not quite as strong as Fritz but sufficient. I really like that it comes with different engines with all have a personality.

It also comes wih a chess playground a la chessbase not nearly as big but enough people are on to play games with.

You can't beat Arena for a shareware program. Once you get the hang of it.
It might be as good as or perhaps better than the major programs such as Fritz or Chess Assistant
