GP's advice is pretty solid. I hadn't ever considered the first round bye..

Well, I'm there to play, so I don't like taking byes if I can avoid it. If I had a problem playing on a Friday I might take a bye if otherwise I would have to play in shorter timed games in the 2 Day schedule.

    The real bonus is that you won't have 0 0 0 0 0 showing after 5 games
    on the score board.

OK ½ 0 0 0 0 is not too good. But it's better than having people making
jokes about you castling kingside 0 0 and then Queenside 0 0 0

Honestly, last time, I was so close to win the tourney, i miss the shot by giving a rook. The ugliest move i've ever seen in my life.
How to get your rook back:In one overcrowded tournament the boards were so close together some guy castled using the rook on the next board.

At the Lothian Championship in 1979/80 my opponent.

( I cannot remember his name - he stood for parliment a few times...)

    went to the toilet.

I moved tables to a game that had finsihed and set up a random postion.
He came back sat down and started thinking.

I got up and sat down at the correct board.

He sat there puzzled looking at the board, then looking about him,
    then looking at me....

...I was wearing my evil ear-to-ear grin.

He saw the funny side - game was drawn.
