i think the concepts of checkmate, stalemate and illegally moving into check, are stupid and pathetic beaurocratic mania gone into overdrive.

Also, in the first great International Tournament, London, 1851, if a person was checkmated, he was required to wear his underpants over his head in the following round.

Long ago people used to bet on every game they played, and when they had lost all their belongings (including their wives 😉) they just kept on playing while putting their body parts on the line. If they lost they simply had to cut them of.

In Lichtenstein they have six different words for "chess," all spelled and pronounced the same way.

In the Inupiat Dictionary of the Eskimo there are thirty-two words for snow, including "snow on clothes," "light snow," "sugar snow," etc, but there are no words for "chess." Just thoght I'd let you know.
