Variation is a sub catagory for openings. For example the Sicilian is an opening, The Dragon is a variation.

OK I AM WRONG ABOUT USING THE WORD "VARIATION" INSTEAD OF "VARIANT"...I didn't mean to start a connotative argument...

I just wanted to hear about chess VARIANTS...

...i've played checkers with chess pieces...does that count?

actually, my uncle tried to teach me chinese chess once...we gave up on the idea after around 20 min.

yeah...i've heard Chinese chess is extremely difficult...tons more rules than regular chess

bughouse is of course an ever popular variant
antichess is fun on an amature level but not worth investing time in too many forcing lines (for example i know that 1.e4 is a forced win for black).
atomic chess (as played on itsyourturn.com) is a lot of fun
i like darkchess (where you can only see your pieces and the squares they could move too.)
team chess (players on a team alternate moves without talking)
