Hi,
Ive recently started using RHP's gamesexplorer and I really like it. It helps me to play decent openings in stead of the silly stuff I used to do.
I would like to use something more decent then RHP's gamesexplorer tho. Something with a bigger database and only GM games is prefered.
Someone pointed me at http://www.chessgames.com but that costs money and I would rather not spend money on it.
Any suggestions for a database as good as the mentioned site above, that is for free?
Thank you for your time.

Chessgames is free as long as you dont want premium features
Chessgames can do that untill move 8 for free or something. Most games, openings take longer then that.

What I did was to download SCID, a free database reader and then get a database by downloading the database of games that is used by Hyatt for Crafty, I cut out junk and duplicates when I find them and add games from TWIC every now and then. I have to be careful using the database as statistics on openings can be distorted by the copious number of junk games on my database. If you search around on the internet you can probably find a better initial database.
Downloading a program sounds like to much work. Id probably have to make the databasses myself and I dont really feel like.
"http://www.chesslive.de/" Looks ok. Can see the preformance there for moves, but not very detailed. Also sais:
"This database is not being updated anymore. The new ChessBase Online database can be accessed direct from ChessBase 10 or ChessBase Light 2009 Premium."
http://www.365chess.com/ is a slow site, but I really like it. Looks good and easy to use. There seem to be alot more games in the database too. I want to figure out what games there are in thier "entire database". Hope only GM games.
Thanks all for your suggestions.
Statistics lie horribly in databases, partly because people tend to misunderstand statistics. A perfect example is when someone looks at a particular move that has been played 100 times and has a 99% win percentage. The careless player thinks that the move must be good, but that absolutely cannot be deduced from the number. It is equally likely that the first 99 people were successful with the move until the second player found a crushing antidote that refuted the whole line, won the lone game in the database, and now GMs avoid the move entirely.
The stats can be a useful STARTING place, but you have to follow the strings and logic back and forth along the "statistical tree" to get to the truth of the matter.
