YIKES.

Not 30 seconds ago, chessgames.com just killed their opening explorer except on payment of $22.00. I was in the midst of researching a line when it suddenly ceased being available.

That, dare I say, SUCKS.

The same for me,just trying to find some caro-khan with op explorer and after 2 moves they say you have to pay..........damn!
Do require payment even for games search?if so I guess I won't go on chessgames at all.
It was a great free chess site for improve openings and to see gm's games, now this kinda sucks!

Reaally strange, now it's all fine but yesterday after 3 moves on the opening explorer it was asking me to become a premium subscriber, not admitting me to go on with the o. exp.😕

I just went to their site to test it and it let me go as far as move #9 before asking me to become a premium member.

They do ask for money,'premium membership'.The weird thing about it is that you can view some lines up to 11 moves yet other only up to 3 moves. For instance,if you click on 1.e4 and then just click on the top choice every time you will see that you don't get any further than move 9.It's different for each line.

It works fine until you get to the point where the game begins to become unique, like all games eventually do. If you or your opponent make an irregular (or uncommon) move early on, then it's gunna ask you to pay cause you're no longer using a common-knowledge opening. Yet, I don't think 22 bucks is worth knowing what Kaspy would do against the Sicilian or the Queen's Gambit, sorry. 😵

It stops you when the number of games for that move is less than a certain point.

YOu'd think they'd start off with five or ten bucks if they wanted to make money, instead of jumping to 22. Oh, well, I don't know what the financial basis is. Charge what the market will bear. I guess a lot of people just won't participate any more.

or they'll just do without the premium features(perhaps find them elsewhere)

I think it stops when it goes less than 200. You can still get in a fair number of moves usually, but the only way a chess game takes on it's own life is when the player starts making moves for themselves, so........ 😉
