All teh grandmasters are really hitting the broadcasts hard with complaints about the current state of chess. Here I'm going to ask 2 main questions really: what is wrong with chess? and Who do you think will be the best FIDE president?
First, I am a new comer to the relatively old arena of professional chess. I know most of the names of the best players, and a few of the smaller ones who are American or English. I never knew chess in its glory days, so I was left asking, "What is wrong with chess?" After doing a little research I came upon something interesting. Tournaments gets fewer in number and smaller every year, presumably because young people all over the world are looking less and less to chess for enjoyment. Of the top 5 tournaments in the world by numbers, there are around only 41 spots for top GM's. Are GMs going to have to start entering the open tournaments? I certainly hope not!
Second, who will be the new FIDE president/chairman? I have heard Bassel is running, and from his interview with Yaz on Play Chess, I am impressed. I read an interview on ChessBase thats says good old Anatoly Karpov could be running as well, so we'll see how that shakes out.
Clearly though, change is in order, or chess may be gone forever!
