en passant, main reasons I dislike crafty this much is that it's not only a lot weaker than its popularity suggests, but also the very low and ridiculous remarks of its creator about rybka's authors.
Ooh, now you've done it. Now we know why you dislike Crafty so much. I'm afraid that the periodic mentioning of Crafty will surely continue on RHP. 😉

BTW, I read a thread on another forum regarding the controversy to which you alluded. I guess I can't get as worked up over it as you have. It seems to me that the bystanders are getting more up in arms about it than the authors are. But that's just my opinion.

there are many far better engines, even many free ones out there, but when some professor makes a research about some relation between the human mind and the computer-like thin ".

in addition, its author is a jerk.

to all these, I always ask, WHY CRAFTY???
Ha! You'll love this one.

In the November 2008 issue of Chess Life magazine, there's an article by Al Lawrence (a holiday shopping guide for the chess player). One of the entries briefly mentions free chess software that can be obtained on the internet (page 35, first column). Which example of a free chess engine does he mention? Rybka, or even Toga? Nope. Why, good old Crafty, of course! He even ascribes a blitz rating of about 3000 elo and a slow rating of about 2800 to Crafty! (Al's clearly not familiar with the CCRL rating lists.)

OK, which of you RHPers paid Al to mention Crafty in his article? 😉
