I would like to buy a computer chess, but I do not know what exactly I must expect from this item, which features I need to check to compare different vendors.
In particular, in a lot of computer chess the difficult level is defined as the thinking depth of the computer. Are there other possibilities? E.g., in a software based computer chess you can choose the ranking of your opponent. Are there computer chesses with this feature?
Has anyone a little experience on this topic?

Thank you and... have good matches 😉

Could you clarify a bit; are you looking for chess software for your computer or a stand-alone chess computer? Also, are you just looking to play against a computer or are you looking for other functions as well. Software can serve to analyze the games you have played to find suggest where you went wrong, serve as a database for your games or include tutorials to help your game. What is most important to you?

I am looking for a stand-alone chess computer, I'm sorry if it was not so clear from my previous post, and I would mainly play against computer. But I would like to find some of the features you cited (databases of matches, ....).

If you get a pocket PC you can buy pocket fritz as an application. It's not quite as good as normal fritz, but has most of the same features and is probably the strongest engine of it's kind. Unfortunately, this is quite an expensive option.

If no one could answer me I suppose no one owns a stand alone computer chess. Does this means that for someone who really wants to improve his skill a computer based chess computer is a better solution?
