Computer Program Assistance: Is it "cheating"...

Hi, I am relatively new to this site, but not to online chess.
Do rating resets occur when people "computer cheat" here? Is there a thread that details the policies about using references for one's game?

Hypothetical Example: Using Chessmaster 9000 for all of one's moves.

Yes. Save the computer analysis until after your game is completed.

rule of thumb (imo): if you're not thinking of the moves, then it's cheating

Ok. I wasn't aware that people could use databases, and some people mentioned their use of databases in their profile. I personally don't use them or any computer program assistance of any kind.
I guess it doesn't help that I haven't lost any games yet. I'm sure I'll be fortunate enough to lose some soon.

How is it possible to know when someone is using computer aids when playing on here? Is there a software which can detect it? If, for example, I am using programs, surely I'd be at least 2000 by now, but that can't be an absolute evidence that I am not using one?

I don't mind if some of the games that I lost because of silly blunders be cancelled and then the rating restored to before the game.... hehehehe.

Besides, why would you want to use a computer engine to play all of your moves?

What fun is that?

I'm glad to here about this.

This is a trust relationship with those whom you play. A good thrashing helps one to learn and therefore improve. What fun could be had from making a computer do the work for you?

so, use of an opening book would be cheating in your view? If i'm learning an opening i will use opening books, but i make that clear in my profile.

I agree on the use of opening books and databases. For me internet chess is about learning, and theory is accessible to everyone so it may as well be used. The best way to memorize openings for real games is to look it up and put it in practice here.
