its just a basic rule, perhaps in your glee for winning you simple overlooked it 🙂

Wendy, I wouldn't worry. Wait for White to move, then study the position closely. Put the kettle on and make a nice cup of tea meanwhile. Have a slice of fruitcake too if it helps you relax. Only then, when you're good and ready, make a move as if it was the last move you'd ever make.

In this game, it probably will be 🙂
