I know this is a freeware chess engine, but I am having a lot of trouble finding it and installing it. Does anybody here have a link to a site that can let me install this to my computer.

BTW
AMD Athlon XP
2.133Ghz
512MB RAM etc., etc.

The repository for all the source code is here: ftp://ftp.cis.uab.edu/pub/hyatt/ if you don't need pre-compiled stuff.

Unzip and copy the ENG file into the folder Engines.

Hmm, where might this folder be at?

I'm at work, so I'm not sure, but I think it's like: c:\Program Files\Chessbase\engines

Those directions presume that you have some version of Fritz, or its kin (Shredder, Hiarcs, etc.). If you dont, try Arena as a free interface. There are several sites where you can get Crafty as a Winboard or UCI engine (both run in Arena). http://www.playwitharena.com/

Yeah I don't have fritz, why would you get crafty if you already have fritz...?

Thanks for the program...can it play against you?

Also...I have everything set up, and I tell crafty to analyze a game, but it just sits there and counts seconds...how am I supposed to get it to analyze?

I feel like an idiot right now...

^ I think Crafty comes free with fritz.....

as does comet B50....

The fritz program itself works as a interface -- and allows you to add new engines....

Yes, you can play against engines in Arena.

Because I have several versions of Fritz, I've never used Arena for analysis. Poking around a bit, though, I found the feature. First, I loaded the PGN file that has my FICS games, and loaded the most recent game.

Then in the Arena menu, I selected Game -- Analyze. A pop-up box opened with three tabs: Source--I selected the current game; Engines--I selected Crafty 19.17; Output--I created a file for the results.

I expect that I'll get the output in PGN format, but this is my first effort to use Arena this way.

Yeah, I saw that, but can't get it to work well. 🙁

It only analyzes the first move, 1.e4, and says that it didn't get it. Hmph 🙁.

I didn't get the output I wanted and expected, but it processed the entire game. There are more options regarding output that I need to play with a bit. The output from my first effort looks like:

It's not as useful as the analysis cranked out by Fritz, but it is certainly a lot for free.

If you really want a powerful engine to analyze for you, get Fruit 2.1 or TogaII.

They are faster and more powerful than crafty.
