I humbly disagree. You can use the "time tactic" if your opponent is low on clock, but other than that you have to make semi-reasonable moves or you will get mated quickly.
I've been checkmated before playing bullet. 🙂
Embarrassingly.

I'm a horrible blitz player. I do enjoy it, though, trying out new openings, tactics. If you are bad at something, i don't see how reducing your play time will help. Unless you're playing an hour of 5 minute chess straight and are suffering from exhaustion. If the game is reasonable i'll go over it in fritz and see where i made mistakes or did something good. generally, fritz will find simple tactics that should have won the game quickly. In 5 minute i've found, recently, it pays to keep up at least equal time or better more of a time advantage. On several occasions i've had a dead lost game and simply moved my king back and forth avoiding checkmate and my opponent has lost on time. I'm not proud of these games, but after all, the time element is an important factor in blitz. I've lost lots of games in a superior position, where it was simply impossible to finish in my time left. My opponent, of course, realized my predicament and played mediocre moves quickly, forcing me to find a way to crack through, sometimes no easy matter.
