Database of opening names?

Does anyone know of the existence of a ChessBase database containing a large number of openings, searchable by name or position? Bill Wall has a good long list on his chess site but it would take a long time to put into cbh format and doesn't have ECO codes. Also the Exeter Chess Club has a good list sorted by ECO but its notation is awkward to read quickly (1. f2f4 g8f6 instead of 1. f4 Nf6)

Alternatively, does anyone have the ChessBase openings database CD and could tell me something more about it than is in the description on commercial sites? Like, does it have the names of the openings in the openings reports?

Thanks,

Paul.

You can search chessbase.com's online base of about 1 million games for position and player. Pretty neat! 😀

You could try looking for a book called "the oxford companion to chess" at the back is an index of named openings & varations, very handy for a starting point of reference. 😀

At least to my knowledge there isn't a database that refers to the opening names as opposed to there respective ECO codes and vice versa.
However, there does exist one copy of it... mine! Over a year ago I made my own one, which I named 'Breaking the ECO Codes'. I can thus look up an opening by name and next to it is the ECO code. The second 'chapter' gives me access to ECO codes with the name (variation) of the opening next to it.
It took quite some hard work to accomplish this. Fritz6 was a wonderful assistant in this job.

Kindest regards

Jan

There is nothing like the MCO Bible. Some things are best left in books.

There's a database by eco,BUT,the names are given too!!
You can't search by name, but you can browse through all the openings. In addition, you can download A LOT of games with every opening you desire.
Now,doesn't that look like christmas?😵
