I have started playing the silician dragon and I am often coming up against the Yugoslav attack. I would be interested to see games where black has sucessfully defended against 1700+ players

Thanks

Save yourself the time and headache and abandon this inferior system.

That's stupid. Just because Karpov won some games in the dragon means crap. Who cares? Does he play Karpov on a regular basis? Karpov I am sure has records like that against alot of openings. He's freaking Karpov. I would encourage you to buy Chris Wards Winning with the Sicilian Dragon 2. BTW, you don't defend against the Yugoslav, you counter attack against the Yugoslav.

Just checked the stats over at Gamecolony.com. The standard dragon scored 42% white, 31%black, 27%draws. The Najdorf, for comparison, scored 37% white 33% black 30% draw. Slightly higher success rate for Najdorf. That being said, at our level any opening can be successful or not. It's more difficult at RHP against someone with a reasonably big database because there's years of history behind the dragon and it's difficult to catch white in a misstep if he's careful. My experience with the Dragon is not good. Over the board you have to be well equipped with background knowledge and study. Evaluations are changing all the time. It's also easy to get positionally crushed by Yugoslav. Maybe if i'd stuck with it, I'd get a reasonable game against Yugo, but i didn't have the time to devote to it. That being said, there are plenty of dragon experts out there who know the nooks and crannies of this opening and you have to be verrry careful with it. If you're a tactical-type player and enjoy learning many lines with varied results go to it!

I've had good success with the Dragon but have struggled against higher rated players who use databases (see Dynamic09). It gets a decent number of easy wins against lower rated players who misstep early.

EDIT: And most importantly I have fun playing it.

Yea, that's what i mean. If you have fun with it, why not? Then there's always that rook exchange sac in the middle game which is always a threat because it carries power all the way into the endgame. Many times white will think, "If only I can survive into the endgame, I'll be ok." Then they find they're not and their two rooks aren't worth a plug nickel and their queenside is a mess!

I play the dragon. I think the endgames in the Yugoslav are better for black for sure. I can't tell you how many times in quick games over the board White has played Nd5, exchanged off the queens on a5 and d2, then just lost. I take off a bunch of pieces and play Kg7-f6-e5-f4. That is, if White moved the g-pawn.

The only defense is a good offense.

Could you post some example games?
