please also post some examples of theoretical games.
opening theory as laid down in an opening manuel.
Players are said to be following theory if the game takes a path that
is well known and can be found in any number of opening books.
But a theorectical game - a complete game?
There are quite a few well known short games that Masters use to
settle for a breeze draw when they wish to conserve their energy
and take a 'time-out'.
Here is an example in the Pirc discovered by Seirawan.
This theorectical game has been played a few times to share the point.

Originally posted by MahoutI think that the application of theory over the board is associated more with the deep knowledge of the theory itself than the mere memorisation of the theory. When you study great and well annotated games you see immediately how the masters strive to bring up all the hidden resources of the position. This proccess is far more sophisticated in CC coz we are not under time pressure and we really have the chance to create ultra complicated situations. Thanks to this site and to strong opponents like Arj14, twes and Watergeus I gradually start to play cautiously, and I hope that soon I will overcome my OTB attitude for fast replies;
In practical terms the application of theory over the board = memorisation.
BTW: eldragonfly, how nice to see you posting a fruitful thread;
