I've read several times where people comment about how their blitz rating is much lower than standard rating. I'm wondering why this is so?

Both opponents play with the same time restriction. Shouldn't both opponents lower their chess play accordingly thereby resulting in similar ratings? Just wondering why there's a desparity.

Some of us elder players take 2 seconds just to adjust to the movement on the screen (must get myself glasses)

the more experienced you get, the faster you solve basic problems. an experienced reader is much faster than an inexperienced one, even though the text itself contains the same exact information for both.

blitz is about intuition, knowing without looking that certain things tend to end badly for you, and some others tend to end well. slow chess is (more) about taking your time and calculating exactly how it'll turn out.

wormwood,

If what you are saying is true, then there should be some who have a higher blitz rating than standard, but I haven't seen a single person who does.

Haebeas,

Seems to me that the younger wipper snappers would have a higher rating, but everyone I've met has a lower blitz rating than standard.

Is the blitz rating determined by computers in the mix? Seems to be the only explanation to me.

Some players specialize in blitz i.e. 3min or even 1min. My ratings skew towards longer time controls but I lose probably 65% of my blitz games on time in a winning position.

As it is I get into time trouble in 90+30 games OTB because I won't hesitate to use 25 min for a move 🙂 I avoid g/45 for this reason.

Ratings are relative to the pool of people being rated.

I'd have to think about this, but for CC vs Blitz I would expect that Blitz games will tend to have more unexpected losses. How that rolls out in the ratings forumula I'm not sure. Perhaps it does bring the whole ecosystem down-or perhaps its mathematically neutral.

Regardless there are far too many variables to compare CC vs Blitz ratings and draw any conclusions.
