I'm at 1700 and have recently played my first 2300. I was shocked by the constant pressure I was under from his aggressive moves. I got whipped in 20 moves and never had a chance to catch my breath. It is a world of difference from my previous highest rated opponent (1800). There I was able to get my game going and even try some ideas of my own. I felt I was in the game and had a chance. Against the 2300 I realized at move 10 I was a goner. π³ :'( For me it is all about the aggression and pressure.
"...so what kind of thing separates the 2100 from the 2300 players."
(about 200 grading points.)π
You can get to 2100 on tactical play alone - living proof.
Actually hit 2200 at my peak.
No endgame knowledge, positional skill zilch,
Just a very good tacticial (and lucky) player.
(well that's what the magazines kept saying).
Over 2300 players
make few blunders (big key point).
They KNOW HOW TO DEFEND THEMSELVES.
Have a good grasp of the ending.
Know how to exploit a positonal weakness.
Have found and play openings that suit their style.
And they too are very good tactical players.
(also that are not intimated by other 2300 players - another key point).
Originally posted by greenpawn34But you have players like Skeeter who is at the 2300 level but seems not to play any other 2300 players but keeps beating the 1800 crowd. I looked at this persons' games trying to suss out what it is that allows that kind of rating without playing others of the same strength so what is up with that?

They dont like to lose either. In fact, I have a theory that the stronger a player becomes the more they hate to lose, until they reach a point of hardly playing at all, just to protect their rating. Of course, if they are a master and can make a living out of playing, regardless of winning or losing, they are a bit more exciting - hence the reason the 2700 players are so much more dynamic and creative then 2500s - they can afford to be (and also, having deeper plans helps as well)

Big big difference between OTB and what goes on here.
C.C. players should have a higher grade.
1600 OTB can and should become 2000+ very eaisly (stop making blunders).
Of course cheapo merchants (guilty) on here will hang around the 1800's
(again living proof).
As for Skeeter just playing 1800's - I take your word for it.
